Connection Changes Everything

Connection is what defines us. Connection to ourselves, to others, to the world around us -- each experience and connection we make in life becomes a part of who we are. At Far Away Friends, we believe that by connecting people from around the world, we are able to break down cultural stereotypes and contribute to the development of a more empathetic world, one friendship at a time.

Cultural Immersion Trips

We LOVE working in Uganda and we think you will too. If you're ready to escape and spend time using your skills and life experiences to advance our vision, we want you to come to East Africa with us Summer 2019. Thanks to our many partnerships in Central and Northern Uganda, on our 2018 volunteer trip you'll have the unique opportunity to travel from Kampala to Namasale to Gulu and maybe even spend a day at the craft market in the city.

Our trips are designed to allow you to experience our work first hand while learning about sustainable international development. We want you to come and meet the people, share the love, and develop the friendships while traveling through five areas of the Pearl of Africa.

We are looking for passionate global citizens with expertise in the areas of education, community engagement, women's empowerment, entrepreneurship, medicine, curriculum development, teacher training, international studies or those who simply have a passion for volunteering abroad.

Far away friends Pen Pal Program

Part of our mission at Far Away Friends is to encourage global citizenship among the next generation of leaders. We fulfill this task through our Cross Cultural Pen Pal program and Cultural Engagement workshops.

By partnering students from countries separated by thousands of miles through letter writing, our Pen Pal program aims to build cross-cultural relationships from which students can encourage each other to succeed in school, learn more about other cultures, and also improve on written communications skills. By building relationships with children from other countries, these students are able to better understand the power of human connection and develop a sense of cultural awareness.

SCHOOL OUTREACH

Public schools in the Namasale area tend to be overcrowded, underfunded and lacking the adequate sanitation, housing, teacher training and educational resources that are essential to healthy child development. Working closely alongside the Administration, Teachers & Parents we are currently engaging with three other primary & secondary schools in the Namasale with the aim of raising the standard for education for all children in the sub-county.

Through our School Outreach Program we have been able to:

  • Provide Mentorship workshops with students at Namasale SEED Secondary School which has resulted in a decrease in absenteeism among girl students
  • Provided sanitary pads & training to girls at our partner schools
  • Host an annual Friendship Football Match and provide soccer balls to our partner schools thanks to Charity Ball
  • Provide free Teacher Training workshops to teachers at our partner schools
